George Washington Regional Commission Receives Technical Grant

This past fall, MMG awarded the George Washington Regional Commission (GWRC) a Technical Grant to support greenway planning on a regional scale in Northern Virginia. The GWRC is the planning district commission for Virginia Planning District 16, which includes the City of Fredericksburg and the counties of Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania, and Stafford. Greenspace and trail planning by the GWRC will lead to critical greenways in some of the highest profile suburban areas of the United States.

Through our work with the SGI, officials of the George Washington Regional Commission (GWRC) asked if they could apply for a Technical Services grant from MMG. The Board of MMG approved such a grant in September of 2009, and the Technical Committee, led by MMG Board member Jesse Glasgow began working with the GWRC over the fall of 2009.

GWRC will gain stakeholder input on areas that are suitable for new greenways. The MMG Technical Services Team, led by MMG Board member Jesse Glasgow, will run this input through a GIS-based suitability modeling process.

This process will result in maps of the region which highlight areas most suitable for new greenway development with emphasis on connecting featured destinations — while promoting recreation and conservation. Project deliverables will include electronic GIS maps which GWRC will integrate with other statewide and regional greenway planning initiatives.
