Coastal Georgia Greenway Applies for TIGER Grant

The Coastal Georgia Greenway (CGG) submitted a proposal in the fall of 2009 to receive funding from the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) Grant program. The $1.5 billion grant program is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 which aims to support projects that “promote greater mobility, a cleaner environment and more-livable communities,” according to a Department of Transportation press release. These goals align well for CGG’s trails connecting five coastal Georgia counties.

Requesting approximately $20 million, the CGG hopes to devote part of the funding to The Island Hopper Trail — which connects Jekyll Island, St. Simons and Brunswick and Sapelo Island. The remaining portion would be allotted to the Savannah — Ogeechee Trail, connecting Richmond Hill to South Carolina.

MMG has been a supporter of CGG since the fall of 2008 and has promised to commit further marketing assistance if the organization wins the TIGER funding. MMG is proud to support this key affiliate of ours in their efforts to gain funding and complete a portion of the larger 155-mile coastal plan. Sometime in the next few weeks, the Coastal Georgia Greenway will receive notification as to whether they will benefit from the stimulus funding.
